SEO, GEO, AEO and AAO are layers, not rivals
Each discipline targets a different reader, and each newer layer quietly assumes the ones beneath it. If you optimise for AI agents before your site can be crawled, nothing downstream works. The honest comparison looks like this:
| Layer | Optimising for | The win looks like |
|---|---|---|
| SEO | Search crawlers and rankings | A page-one ranking on Google |
| AEO | Answer engines — featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants | Your content quoted as the direct answer |
| GEO | Generative AI engines — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity | Your brand cited inside an AI-generated response |
| AAO | Autonomous AI agents acting on a user's behalf | An agent shortlists, contacts or books you — no human browsing |
The stack is already visible in Malaysian search. Google switched on AI Overviews for Malaysia and Singapore in December 2025, and in Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese since May 2025. Search Engine Land reports AI Overviews now appear in at least 16% of all searches, and significantly more often on comparison and high-intent queries — exactly the ones that decide who gets the customer.
SEO: still the foundation
SEO is still the discipline that decides whether anything above it can work. A site that crawlers cannot reach, that loads slowly, that hides its services in vague paragraphs, is invisible to every layer that follows — including the AI ones. Google's AI Overviews are built on Google's core ranking systems, so the old fundamentals of fast pages, clear structure, credible links and consistent business information have not lost value.
What has changed is what SEO can promise. A 2026 study that replayed 158,099 ChatGPT answers and 468,037 citations (Chen and Koudas, arXiv) found that 97% of the pages ChatGPT retrieved were absent from Google's top 50 for the same questions. Classic rank is no longer a proxy for AI visibility. Yet the same study found that inbound links still influence which pages AI engines retrieve. In plain terms: SEO keeps you eligible. It no longer guarantees you the customer. If your JB business isn't getting leads from Google, the fix starts at this layer, not the trendy one.
GEO: be the answer AI engines cite
GEO — generative engine optimization — is the practice of making AI engines cite your brand inside their generated answers. Worth a detour: when we searched Google itself for the difference between these terms, its own AI Overview confused generative engine optimization with geographical optimization. The term is young enough that even the world's biggest answer engine has not settled it. Our working definition: GEO is about ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews naming and linking your business when they answer a customer's question.
The evidence on what earns citations is firmer than the terminology. Princeton's GEO research, across 10,000 real queries, found that pages containing quotations and statistics earned 30–40% higher visibility in AI answers than pages without them. The arXiv study adds a harder truth: retrieval — which pages the AI's own search pulls in — explained 32% of citation variation, while all on-page features combined — FAQ blocks, schema markup, summary boxes and page speed — explained just 2.8% within a site.
Pages are cited when searched; brands are named when remembered. — Chen & Koudas, "What Drives AI Citations?", arXiv, October 2026
The practical takeaway for an owner is refreshingly unglamorous. Write pages that answer the questions your customers actually ask, in the words they use. Back claims with named numbers. Being a brand the engines remember — mentioned across directories, reviews, press — does the rest.
AEO vs GEO: the same thing?
In daily agency use, AEO and GEO overlap so heavily that most practitioners use them interchangeably — but the distinction is worth keeping. AEO, answer engine optimization, is the older term: it targets systems that extract one direct answer from your content, such as featured snippets, People Also Ask boxes and voice assistants reading a single sentence aloud. GEO targets generative systems that synthesise multi-source responses and cite several brands inside them.
The overlap is real: both reward direct answers, clean structure and verifiable authority. The distinction matters most in measurement. AEO success is a snippet you can see in a search result. GEO success is a citation you have to ask the AI for. Our advice: optimise for the question, not the acronym, and track both.
AAO: the layer Google's AI Overview forgot
Ask Google the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO and its AI Overview will give you three definitions — and miss the fourth entirely. That is how new AAO is. AI Agent Optimization (AAO) is the practice of structuring your website, structured data and business information so autonomous AI agents can find you, verify you against other sources, and complete actions on a user's behalf: comparing vendors, shortlisting options, requesting quotes, making bookings.
"SEO — be found. AEO — be the answer. AIEO — be the recommendation. AAO — be chosen when no human is in the loop." — Jason Barnard, Search Engine Land, February 2026
Barnard calls the same discipline "assistive agent optimization"; other practitioners use "AI Agent Optimization" for the identical acronym. Either way, the shift it names is real: Similarweb, which published a full agentic search optimization guide in June 2026, puts the difference plainly — GEO earns you a citation in the answer, while agentic optimization determines what happens when the agent follows that citation. On most sites, agents currently fail to complete the task and switch to a competitor whose site they can actually use.
What an agent needs from your site is specific, and most of it is unglamorous: schema markup that describes your services machine-readably, an optional llms.txt file that helps AI crawlers understand what you offer, business data that matches across Google Business Profile, directories and your website, action labels that say exactly what they do ("Book a trial class", not "Learn more"), and published pricing ranges — agents comparing vendors flag pricing opacity rather than guess. For a JB or Singapore SMB, an agent-completable action can be as simple as a WhatsApp booking link an assistant can trigger without a human navigating your site.
Where a JB or SG business should start
Fix the layers in order — skipping ahead wastes money. Five moves, roughly an afternoon each:
- SEO fundamentals. Crawlable pages, fast load, mobile-clean, honest service descriptions. Everything else assumes this.
- Answer questions in their own terms. One question per heading, direct answer in the first sentence. This serves AEO and GEO simultaneously.
- Add proof with named numbers. Statistics, quotes and specifics lift AI visibility 30–40% (Princeton GEO research) — and they persuade humans the same way.
- Make actions explicit. Schema markup, an optional llms.txt file, unambiguous buttons, published price ranges. This is the AAO layer, and almost no local business has done it.
- Keep entity data consistent everywhere. Same name, address, hours and service list on your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories — agents cross-check before they recommend.
One local caveat: if you run a local-service business, the Map Pack is not going anywhere. An aimode.my pilot in July 2026 found that every Malaysia-localised commercial query it tested returned a Map Pack rather than an AI Overview — a small pilot of eight queries, so directional rather than a benchmark rate, but the implication holds. Your Google Business Profile is still the single highest-return listing you own.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
They overlap heavily but are not identical. AEO targets answer extraction — featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants quoting one sentence from your page. GEO targets citation inside AI-generated responses from engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Optimise for the question and you serve both.
Is AAO a real discipline or another marketing acronym?
AAO is real and very young. It was formally framed on Search Engine Land in February 2026, and Similarweb published a complete agentic search optimization guide in June 2026. Google's own AI Overviews do not yet mention the term — an early, accurate definition therefore carries outsized visibility value.
Do I still need SEO if customers ask AI instead of Google?
Yes. AI engines still crawl, rank and retrieve web pages, and Google's AI Overviews are built on the same core ranking systems as classic search. SEO keeps you eligible for every layer above it; skipping it does not move budget from old media to new, it removes you from the retrieval set entirely.
What should a small business do first?
An afternoon, no cost: verify your Google Business Profile is accurate and current, publish honest pricing ranges on your website, and make sure each service page states what you do, for whom, and what to do next. Layer GEO content and structured data on top of that foundation — in that order.
The acronyms will keep multiplying; the discipline underneath them does not. Being findable, citable and choosable is one job.
